Kohn family photos

Created 2014.08.18
Edited 2015.08.31

I have these photos (mostly of my father's family) that I hope to identify with a date and subject. If you have corrections or additions for any information, please leave a comment on this page or contact me directly at tgkohn@aol.com.

Waaay back

I presume the Kohn family originated in Consdorf, Luxembourg. However, very little is known about the famly there. What information is available indicates the family lived there in the early 17th Century, and probably before that for many decades. A reference to Herber, Luxembourg occurs in the Familienbuch of Wasserliesch, Germany. This town is given as the origin of the parents of Nikolaus Kohn (died 1835 at age 74) when he married Magdalena Beck in 1800, and his father's name was given as Michel.

Another origin for the Kohn family is Temmels, Germany. This town name is attached to the parents of another Nikolaus (born 1817), Johann Kohn and Katharina Leuck-Kohn. This Nikolaus married Margarethe Türk in 1841. Nikolaus' brother Peter was married in 1831 to Eva Lorich, and that record cites the parents from Temmels.

So the Wasserliesch Familienbuch documents that this branch of the Kohn family called Wasserliesch home at least as early as 1831. A related branch may have lived in Wasserliesch even a couple generations before that. However, documentation is scarce. Even the marriage entries give only the date and the name of the groom and bride. A marriage in 1771 of Matthias Kohn (my 4th great grandfather) and Magdalena Kessler refers to his parents as Johann-Matthias Kohn and Elisabeth Vietor. However, very little other reference is made to the groom's parents.

Much more information is available for my 3rd great grandparents, Peter Kohn and Eva Lorig, who married in 1803. They had three sons and a daughter: Johann Matthias (V), John (III), Nikolaus (III), and Angela. Of these, Johann Matthias V is my 2nd great grandfather, born 1804 and died 1877. He married Katharina Dahm (1803-1868), and they had ten children.

Three of their children emigrated to the United States. The first was Mathias III (1829-1888) in 1855, who settled in La Crosse WI. The brother, my great-grandfather, John M (1839-1919) emigrated in 1865, and Michael V (1844-1907) in 1872.

Theodore Kohn (1875-1924) was the first son of my great-granduncle Michael Kohn V. Michael settled first in La Crosse WI, married Theresa Lörscher in 1874, and then resettled with his family to Beloit KS by 1880. They again resettled to Leavenworth KS soon after 1880 and had several children, of whom I am still researching for more certain information. Their first child was Theodore, who died in the Spanish-American War. Buried in the military cemetery in Leavenworth, he is the only family member who has a tombstone there. All others died destitute and buried in the paupers' graves at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Leavenworth.

Parents

My parents were Matthew Robert Kohn (1901-1971) and Louise Josephine Deneke-Kohn (1913-1990). They married on my mother's 34th birthday, 1947.02.13—Dad was then 46 years old. The witnesses to their marriage at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church were her brother Leo Deneke and friend Margaret M. Heger, both of Beloit. The officiant was Monsignor William J Butzer.

Math Kohn (1901-1971) in 1942
Although Dad was already 40 years old by Pearl Harbor, he was still not exempt from the peacetime draft that was enacted in 1940. He enlisted or was drafted on 4 November 1942, and he was inducted into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Benning GA. However, he served only four months and was discharged on 5 March 1943 from Fort Belvoir VA. I believe that the short enlistment resulted from a change in the age range for conscription from 21 through 45 to 18 through 38, which became effective after December 5, 1942.

Louise Deneke-Kohn (1913-1990) in 1939
Meanwhile, Mom began to attend nursing school at St. Margaret's Hospital in 1938, and she was awarded a diploma in 1944. A portion of that time was spent as a nursing assistant at a munitions factory near Kansas City KS. With her freshly awarded diploma, she returned to Beloit and worked at Community Hospital.

Jimmy and Tommy Kohn, early 1952
My brother Jimmy was born in November 1948, and I was born in August 1951.

The farm included a two-story frame house, granary, equipment shed, barn, and a small pond east of the barn. The livestock included at various times about 15 cattle, 10 hogs, 25 sheep, 20 laying hens, usually 2 dogs, several cats, and one pony "Goldie."

Jimmy went to the Ionia public school for first through third grades, from autumn 1953 through spring 1956. When I began school in 1956, we were bused along with neighbor kids to Esbon's public schools.

Grandparents

Mike Kohn and Louise Ohnsat,
married 1900.08.13 at St. Boniface, Tipton.
My father's parents lived most of their lives in the Tipton KS area, and as youngsters they lived on farms about a mile apart. They married 13 August 1900 at St. Boniface in Tipton. Their witnesses were her brother Bernard Ohnsat and his sister Katherine Kohn.

Mike Kohn, age 71.
John Michael Kohn (1879-1965) was born March 18th at his parents' homestead north of Tipton (Carr Creek township, T7S R10W section 25 in Mitchell county).

Louise Ohnsat-Kohn, age 75.
Louise Ohnsat-Kohn (1875-1959) was born in Pittsburgh PA, and she came with her parents and older brother to Osborne county in 1878.

Great Grandparents

with their three oldest—Peter, Mike, and Katie
John Mathew (John M., Johann Mathias) Kohn (1839-1919) was born in Wasserliesch, Germany on January 10th 1839. He was the second son in his family to emigrate to the U.S., and he departed after making an application on 30 Jun 1865.

Susanna Reinert (1848-1887) was born in Igel, Germany on January 8th, 1848. She was the eldest of five children who emigrated with their parents after applying on 9 Feb 1867. The family first lived on a farm northwest of Caledonia MN. Her father John Reinert died there in 1871, and her mother resettled the family to Tipton along with about a dozen other settler families.

Uncles and Aunts

The Mike Kohn family in 1950: (back l to r) Nick (age 46), John (36),
Sr. Edna Louise (38), Math (49), Leo (44); (center) Katherine (40);
(front) Al (33), Mke (71), Louise (75), Mike (48).
I had occasional contact with all my uncles and aunts as  I grew up, although only Uncle John lived near Tipton, the family's home town. Uncle Nick and his wife Anna lived near Burr Oak KS, about a half hour north of our farm near Ionia KS. Tipton was a bit more than an hour south-southwest from us. Sister Edna Louise lived and worked in Salina from what I remember, and that was an hour and a half away. I'm not sure where Uncle Leo lived, since we saw him only at large family gatherings. The same was the case with Uncle Al, who my mother called the "Black sheep of the family." Aunt Katherine lived quite far away, in Albuquerque NM. I think all our trips to visit her included an overnight with Uncle Mike, who lived near Spearville KS, in the area of Dodge City—about three and a half hours away.

Aunts Katherine (age 10) and Isabella
(8) at their first communions, about 1920.
OR
Great-aunts Katie Kohn and Anna Kohn
at their first communion, about 1890.
This communion portrait has been noted "First Communion Katherine 10 years & Sister Edna Louise 8 years." The clothing doesn't fit with 1920, to fit with their ages. The veils instead relate to Louise Ohnsat's wedding picture, and I suspect the photo was taken in the period 1890 to 1905. Thus, I believe the portrait may be of Katie and Annie Kohn at their first communion, likely 1891 when they were ten and nine, respectively.

Mike and Evelyn Kohn

Mike Kohn and Evelyn Ritchie,
married 1939.08.30 St. Mary, Garden City
Michael Alexander (Mike) Kohn (1902-1987) and Evelyn Ritchie (1915-1995) were married on 30 August, 1939 at St. Mary Catholic church, Garden City KS. Their 3 children were Mary, Charles, and Galen.

Nick and Anna Kohn

Nick and Anna Kohn, (1981 or before)
Nicholas Frank Kohn (1904-1991 ) and Anna Long (1909-1981) were married around 1933, perhaps in New Almelo KS. Their 7 children were Margaret, Bernard, Joseph, Robert, Arthur, Eugene, and Anna Marie.

Photo 63. 1933.04.xx. Nick (Francis Nicholas Frank) Kohn (1904-1993) and Anna Margaret Long (1909-1981) on their wedding day, April 1933. They may have lived near Tipton first, since several of their children were baptized at St. Boniface. My parents and I visited them occasionally as I grew up, on their farm north of Burr Oak KS, in Jewell county.

I hope to find their exact wedding date and identify the children who were baptized at St. Boniface.

  • Is my guess correct that Anna was from New Almelo KS or a farm near there?
  • How did they meet each other?
  • Where did they live after their marriage?
  • When did they move to the Burr Oak KS area? Where exactly was the farm? What type of farming did the family pursue?
  • Did Nick and Anna live in this one location until retirement or advanced age?

Other Family Members

Robert and Annemarie Schuh

Photo 1 The Robert Schuh family, about 2000: daughters Barbara and Susanne (back), my third cousin Robert and his wife Annemarie Reuter-Schuh, in their home in Wasserliesch, Germany. Robert is the great-grandson of the sister of my great-grandfather. Our common ancestors are 2nd Great-Grandparents Johann Matthias Kohn V (1804-1877) and Katharina Dahm (1803-1868), who spent their whole lives in Wasserliesch.

Great-Grandparents
Mine: Johann Matthias Kohn VIII (1839-1919) and Susanna Reinert (1848-1887)
Robert's: Barbara Kohn (1831-1905) and Johann Schuh (1826-1891)
Grandparents
Mine: Mike Kohn (1879-1965) and Louise Ohnsat (1875-1960)
Robert's: Joannes Schuh (1867-1949) and Maria Giwer (1868-1949)
Parents
Mine: Matthew Kohn (1901-1971) and Louise Deneke (1913-1990)
Robert's: Johann Mathias Schuh (1903-1977) and Anna Franziska Fisch (1914-2010)

Photo 62. Undated. A postcard from Wasserliesch, Germany. The top image is a view of the town with the Mosel River and left bank of the wine growing region in the background. The bottom left image is of a Kaufhaus (general store) owned by the widow Rummel. The bottom center image is of the Gasthaus (hotel-pub) owned by my great granduncle Johann Kohn (1834-1902) and his wife Anna Hild-Kohn (1830-1894).

Johann Kohn and his siblings Peter (1825-1908, unmarried), Nicholas/Nikolaus (1827-1871, married to Maria Müller of Konz), Barbara (1831-1905, married Johann Schuh of Wasserliesch), and Katharina (1841-1908, unmarried) remained in Wasserliesch, while three of their brothers—Mathias, John M., and Michael—emigrated to America. Today, descendants of Barbara Kohn still live in Wasserliesch, though the Kohn name of our family has not survived.

Photo 61. Undated. A larger version of the Gasthaus operated by Johann Kohn and Anna Hild-Kohn. I presume it is the family who stands in front of the main entrance. The group appears to have two parents and five children.

I know of only one son who survived past infancy: Johann-Mathias Michael Kohn (1873-1955). The other children were Peter Kohn (1875-1876) and an unnamed daughter (1880-1880). It's possible that Johann and Anna had another child between 1876 and 1880, and one or two more after 1880. However, the Wasserliesch Familienbuch lists only these three children.

The children might be those of the Johann Schuh-Barabra Kohn family. Their children were Katharina (1864-1940), Maria (1866-1866), Johann (1867-1949), Peter (1869-1873), Michel (1870-1946), Johann Mathias (1872-aft 1908), and Margarete (1875-aft 1900).
