How I research U.S. Census enumerations

It can be sometimes easy or sometimes frustrating to find a person in the U.S. Censuses. But it's a valuable tool to understand more about an ancestor, if their enumeration is found in one or more censuses.

Background

Three types of censuses are available for researchng .
  • Most member states of the USA conduct State Censuses on a regular basis. The exceptions are Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and West Virginia. The variety of data collected varied with the state and the year.

Availability

Copies of many state censuses are on microfilm at the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The Family History Library's most complete collections of state censuses are for Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. The Family History Library has provided most censuses as a set of digital images with a searchable database.

Search the Indexes

The following links are to a search page to the digital indexes managed by the Family History Library. The general search page can also post census appearances, and a general search could be more useful if you hope to find several census appearances for one family group.

Organizing Your Census Search

If your family data is very up-to-date, you may need to search for only a few isolated census enumerations. But if you want to provide census data for a large number of people in your extended family, you may find this guide useful.
  1. Review your existing data on ancestors and place their family names as relevant searches for each census year available. Typically, this results in a "Long Table" that correlates each person's birth and death years with available censuses.
  2. Organize the "Long Table" into research groups:
    • Into geographic areas, if you want to research all the census information for each locality. This focus produces detail for a One-Place Study (Step 3).
    • Into family groups, if you want to research each family as a set for detail in a Family Study (Step 4).
  3.  One-Place Study approach
    1. steps to be added.
  4. Family Study approach
    1. steps to be added.

Searching Transcribed Data

Census records can have many errors, as three steps created the indexed census information. (First is the person who provides the information during the census. Ages and dates can be incorrectly remembered; spellings may not be accurate. Second is the person who writes down the information during the census. Often the errors made in this step are matters of spelling or legibility. Third is the person who transcribes the information to the index. The transcriber is furthest removed from the accurate information. In recognition of this fact, most transcription efforts include one or more reviews before placing the index online.) In one case, my great grandfather was Johann Mathias Kohn at his birth. He later called himself "John M Kohn" in America. However, his name was entered to the index as "John W Kaserly." The family name has been indexed in other censuses with other spellings too: "Cohen," "Kahn," and several others.

How can you use the search page to find such an erroneous entry? Start with the most specific information, and gradually make the search less specific. Or use different combinations of known information.
  • Search for the full, known name.
    • This step is most useful for relatively uncommon names that are spelled correctly.
    • For a more common names, make the search more specific by providing a birth location and date.
    • The familysearch.org search engine can return thousands of results, but the website allows only about 5000 results to be displayed.
    • The familysearch.org website allows you to select the display of 20, 50, or 75 results on each page.
    • You can edit the URL to display as many as 500 entries per page.
      1. Find the portion of the URL that reads "count=20".
      2. Change the number to a value 500 or less.
      3. Press [Enter]. It will take a bit longer for the results to display.
      4. After you've reviewed the results, use the [Next] button at the bottom of the page to go to the next page. Using the Next button instead of the page number buttons will display as many as 5000 results in successive pages.
  • Search for the full name in a specific state, county, or city.
  • Search for known variants of the full name. Given name: "John M," "John," "Matthew," and "J M" are four possibilities for the enumeration.
At least in the familysearch.org search engine, "John" and "Johann" are automatically checked while searching for either variant of the name, similarly for variants of other names such as "Matthew" and "Mathias."
  • Search for the family name plus an initial for the given name. Supply the initial as "J*" to post all names starting with J.
The given name may have been incorrectly entered or illegible.
  • Search for the family name as an initial and asterisk. Supply the full first name or its initial.
The family name may have been entered incorrectly or illegible. For this search, we assume that the first letter was correct and legible.
  • Search for the the first names of two persons known (or assumed) to be residing together.
For example, enter the first name of the husband and the first name of his wife.
In case the husband or wife has died before the census, try entering the name of child who is younger than about 20 and would likely be at home with the family.

List of old Familienbücher at Trier Archive

I came across an inventory of older, handwritten Familienbücher as listed by Deacon Würringer at the diocesan archives in Trier. The inventory is the first item of the Family History Library film 1336871, perhaps now available online. [Date?]

The inventory has only a few pages, most of which document Familienbücher for the Trier parishes. The last page lists FBs for several parishes at a small distance from Trier, but still within the Verbandsgemeinde.

At this republication of 2018.10.20, I provide a good transcription instead of the OCR rendering of these pages. I also provide a translation (and expansion as needed) of the pages.

Family Books and Alphabetic Indexes of Trier

Subscription 77, items 1-62

The use of "Subscription" means perhaps that the publication was actually sent to several members who had asked for regular updates to the publications of the diocesan archives.

The actual items documented in this publication includes items 1 through 66 for churches and registrars in Trier and items 67 through 92 for churches in towns that are generally within the wider district that is now called "Trier-Land."

Summarized Parish Register of St. Joseph, Kansas

The parish registers of St. Joseph, Kansas have entries as early as 1873. These early entries were made by Father Louis-Marie Mollier, who was an itinerant priest for much of north-central Kansas. As such, Fr. Mollier distributed the sacraments to early settlers of of Delphos, Glasco, Beloit, Tipton, Osborne, Cawker City, Downs, and Norton in central Kansas.

The contents of the first parish registers were summarized by Robert L. Gieber and published through the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The document is microfilmed and available as an item in FHL film 1440446.

Mollier was not the only itinerant priest to serve the Kansas area. Rev. Joseph Perrier in Emporia established some 40 missions in southeast Kansas. Others, too, brought the sacraments to the pioneers. However, we do have recorded evidence that Fr. Mollier was the primary pastor for Tipton. Tucked into Baptismal Reigster 1 for St. Boniface are scraps of paper that list, in the same hand throughout, the priests for Tipton from 1874 through 1907, The first entry (page 22a) reads, "Priests, 1872-1875 Fr. Mollier alla 3-4 Monata non Concordias Mass at Cawker." Unfortunately, we may not have a primary source with solid corroboration.

The following images are being loaded to this post on an occasional basis. At a later date, this post will contain searchable data. Since my search interests are primarily the Kohn and Reinert families of Tipton, these pages have been completed.

Foreword

Although it is often heard that the St. Joseph parish is the oldest parish in the Salina Diocese, this is not true. That honor probably goes to St. Mary's Church at Clifton, followed by St. Bernard's at Clara, both of which were established in the spring of 1866.

It is for this reason that most baptisms, marriages and burials for the St. Joseph community occurring before 1873 are found in the parish records of St. Mary's and St. Bernard's.

The records for St. Joseph's begin in 1873, the year of the ordination of Father Louis Mollier, a native of France, and they end in 1993. Although there have been marriages performed after 1993 in St. Joseph's Church, they were recorded in the registers for St. John the Baptist parish in Clyde, KS. It will be noted that the priests ministering to the St. Joseph community will often say that a baptism, etc. was performed at St. Joseph's Church, Clyde, KS, rather than St. Jospeh, KS, since the post office address at that particular time was Clyde.

As with any document from handwriting, caution —and imagination— must be used when searching names here. Since many of the entries were originally in Latin or French, it was often a matter of choice for me to render the name in English. For example Jacobus in Latin could be rendered either James or Jacob in English, or Jacques in French. The French-speaking priests also had to contend with English, German and even Czech names, so the way they inscribed them in the register was often not the way the names are spelled today. Also, since many of the French Canadian names were unfamiliar even to the French priests (Ozilda, Exiline, Edmée, etc.) there is quite a bit of variety in the spellings. Sometimes the the priest had his own way of rendering a name in Latin or French, and I had no way of knowing what the name really was. I think, for example, that Father Mollier usually rendered Josephine as Josephe, the -e distinguishing it from the male form Joseph. Likewise, I think he rendered Henrietta as Henrélie, Anrélie or Aurélie.

page iv
Although as a French teacher, I was often tempted to correct the spelling of names as I know they should have been spelled in standard French, I usually refrained from doing so. the French name Moïses, for example is most often found as Moise or Mose. Another name that is often "Butchered" is Desnieges, a pretty name deriving from the title to the Blessed Virgein, Notre Dame des Nieges (literally Our Lady of the Snows).

Since in French the letter H is silent, be prepared to find an H where it would not be found today or absent where it should be. This is especially important for names beginning with vowels. If one looks for ARPIN, for example, one should also look for HARPIN. Likewise Otott-Hautotte; Urban-Herban; Hercure-Ercure.

Names were entered by the priests as they heard them, and there are often many different combinations of letters that can be used to represent a particular sound. All of these possibilities might be expected for the name Odette, for example: Odet, Audet, Odette, Audette, Hodet, Hodette, Haudette. Likewise Bachand, Bachamp, Bachant, Bashamp, Baschand, Bashant. Sometimes the same sound can be found spelled by very different letters such as CYR(E) - SIRE, LeClerc - LeClair.

It was difficult for me to interpret some of the handwritten names and I apologize for errors found here. I still do not know, for example, how some names should be spelled. For example:

Saindon - St-Don - Saindou - St-Dou(x)? -u- and -n- are hard to distinguish
Mondon - Moundou(x)?
Saintonge - St-Onge?

The French articles Le, L', and La also may cause confusion. For example the name LaFontaine might be found Fontaine or Fountain. L'Écuyer (meaning horseman or squire) is often spelled Lecuyer as one word. Likewise L'étourneau and Letourneau. Some names were translated: White for LeBlanc and Greenwood for Boisvert for example.

The editor thanks Father Leroy Metro and Ms. Brenda Koch at St. John the Baptist Church in Clyde for their interest in and concern for the preservation of church records by allowing them to be computerized.
