S.Hooker emailed me with the information "The national road had a marker about 5 miles west of West Jefferson, Ohio [Madison County] on what was route # 40 in late 1940's. Also check The Red Brick Tavern in Layfeyette, Ohio just west on # 40 from the marker. You might be interested in a book on the National Road. "

ReplyDelete"I am one of the local historians in Madison County, Ohio. The national road goes through Summerford, Lafayette and West Jefferson here in Madison County.
"In regards to any records of who traveled the National Road, I know of none in existence for this area. The only Historic house we have is the Red Brick Tavern and that is on the verge of closing again. The dining area just shut down a couple of months ago. The tavern or bar area is the only thing open. One of the other old houses, that was a coach stop has just been sold to a seed company. That land is adjacent to the Molly Caren Agriculture Center where the annual Farm Science Review is held."
