Vorwort: Mit dieser Arbeit wird der achte Kreisband zu dem Gesamtthema: "Die Amerika-Auswanderung aus dem Regierungsbezirk Trier im 19. Jahrhundert" vorgelegt. Ihr kommen die bisher gemachten Erfahrungen und in vieljähriger Tatigkeit gesammelten Unterlagen zugute. Da die Vorgänge im Kreis Daun, wie auch in den übrigen Kreisen, nur Teile eines größeren Geschehens sind, wer den sie aus Gründen der Übersichtlichkeit und vor allem des inneren Zusammenhangs nicht isoliert betrachtet. Vielmehr umfasst die Darstellung einen größeren Rahmen, in den die Dauner Geschehnisse eingebettet sind. Bei der Bearbeitung des siebenten Kreisbandes, es handelt sich um Trier stadt, wurde nach dem gleichen Gesichtspunkt verfahren. Dieser Band wurde dem Institut für Geschichtliche Landeskunde an der Universität Bonn Ende des vergangenenen Jahres zur begutachtlichen Äußerung vorgelegt. Das Institut bemerkt u.a.: "Im Übrigen darf ich Sie zu der Zusammenstellung und der systematischen und gründlichen Ausschöpfung sowie der durchdachten methodischen Anlage des Werkes sehr beglückwünschen. Sie vermittelt nicht nur den Eindruck von der Größe und dem Umfang der Auswanderung sondern bietet auch vorzügliches Material für die inneren, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse im Trierer Bezirk und ist somit neben der speziellen Zielsetzung auch für die übrige Forschung wichtiges landsskundliches Material". Dies, die Tabellen und Statistiken usw. "machen die Arbeit zu einer richtigen Dokumentation". In weitem Umfang werden diese Angaben auch für die vorliegende Arbeit zutreffen. Sie liefert gewiß einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Geschichte des Kreises Daun im 19. Jahrhundert und gleichzeitig zur Volksgeschichte des Trierer Raumes. Dies umso mehr als die Auswanderungsforschung in unserm Gebiet bis dahin historisches Brachland war. Zudem wird die Arbeit auch der Familienforschung wichtige Hinweise liefern. Zu ganz besonderem Dank bin ich verpflichtet Herrn Landrat Urbanus, Daun, für die vorbildliche Zusammenarbeit, das große Interesse, das er dieser Arbeit entgegenbrachte und nicht zuletzt für die warmherzige Förderung des Werkes.
